Emerging from Aotearoa’s surging new wave of shoegaze, Libbianski return with Episode 1, a striking, self-produced EP that solidifies their place as one of the region’s most exciting heavy-dream/doom-pop hybrids. Out now via Over The Hill Records, the release captures a band fully in command of their immersive, slow-burn sonic world.
Recorded and produced entirely in their home studio, Episode 1 showcases the raw, immediate chemistry of Libbianski’s current three-piece lineup — a shift that pushed the group further into DIY experimentation, textural layering, and emotionally weighty songwriting. The result is their most focused and atmospheric work to date.
Formed in 2022, Libbianski pull from a wide swath of Wellington’s underground — post-metal, alternative rock, dream pop — forging a sound that is equal parts visceral and ethereal, with towering guitars, pulsing low-end, and drums that anchor the chaos with hypnotic force. Critics across New Zealand have taken notice:

The new EP follows the success of their 2024 debut Useless Splendour, recorded by Troy Kelly (The Armoury), mixed by Chris Johnson (Deafheaven, The Electric Bunker), and mastered by Alan Douches (West West Side Music, NY). That release put the band on the map, leading to an ambitious run of New Zealand and Australia dates with the support of Footstomp Music — tours that helped sharpen the band’s live intensity and inform the direction of Episode 1.
With its lead single “Continue The Sad” — accompanied by a moody, haunting visual by Nat Reid — Libbianski invite listeners deeper into their world: widescreen melancholy, shimmering distortion, and a doom-pop sensibility that feels both intimate and immense.
