Brat – Manslayer

From the ever-vivid and wildly varied New Orleans scene, Brat return with “Manslayer”, released via Prosthetic Records. The concept, and the title is pretty self-explanatory, flips the horror movie stereotype that casts women as victims, turning the tables through the lyrics and the ferociously unhinged vocal performance of Liz Selfish, all wrapped in a generous and often carefully concealed layer of irony: just to give you one very direct example, is perfectly summed up in the video for “Speculum Bleed“: NSFW alert! We’re being kind by warning you in advance! Also, just to give you an idea of where we’re headed, “Aileen Wuornos” hits like a sledgehammer, leaving absolutely no room for doubt about what this band is all about, musically (bimbocore or bimbogrind are, in our opinion, genuinely terrible genre labels, but think of an extreme crossover between Slayer, sludge and grindcore and you won’t be too far off) and lyrically (Wuornos inspired the blockbuster film Monster, just to put things in context). While “Asking for Hell” pushes the Slayer-esque schizophrenia to its absolute limit, “Trophy Hunting” is perhaps the most immediately accessible track (relatively speaking) where the band’s hyperviolence finds its most direct outlet. Every single track goes straight to the point, averaging around two and a half minutes, no filler, no fluff, yet always arranged with a remarkable degree of care and precision. A solid concept, a merciless performance, an attitude that sits somewhere between swaggering confidence and gleeful provocation, packed with references that will send horror fans into an absolute frenzy. What more could you ask for?
