The press release accompanying this record describes “Metalicious” as “chaotic recession pop, y2k-coded, metal madness.” Fair enough, as definitions go, it is broad and deliberately disorienting, but the word “chaos” does feel like a pretty accurate representation of the vision of Hannah Collins, known to the world as Scene Queen. A contagious chaos, at that, because if we are going to talk about Bimbocore (and it would be hard to come up with a worse genre label), one has to admit that what is served up on the plate is varied and rather appetising: take “Manicure“, with its oblique and bizarre momentum, an opening built on groove metal foundations and a half-spoken, half-rapped delivery that spills into an annoyingly catchy, sing-song bridge before landing on a coda that flirts with deathcore territory, all of it packed into a razor-sharp two minutes flat.”Tracksuit” and “Drop Dead Gorgeous” (featuring TX2) sail along the same coordinates, with enough variation on the theme to keep them feeling fresh and compelling. An impactful EP, then, one that plays with pop as freely as it does with more core-oriented solutions, in a mix that may not win over the purists but carries an undeniable appeal… at least over the short distance!
