New EP from Theory of a Deadman, the first of two parts titled “Funeral Songs”, featuring six new tracks from the Canadian rockers. The record kicks off right away with a hit like “Barricade“, which after a tiptoeing intro hits the listener with a raw, driving energy and an easily digestible melodic hook. The band’s “fun” factor comes to the surface in the playful single “Winnebago (Lay Low)”, a sort of ode to life on the road, and in “Monster Truck” , both immediate tracks that feel genuinely uncalculated and written on the fly, with a heavily hard rock aftertaste (almost punk in attitude, see “Funeral Song“!) and a clear urge to be played at full volume. You can really feel how much fun Tyler Connolly and co. had writing and, above all, playing this handful of songs, in a kind of throwback to their early days filtered through the experience gained over their years on the road. The humour running through the tracks (see “Prenup“) and the band’s refusal to take themselves too seriously gives us a handful of songs that are immediate, fresh and enjoyably (hard) rock. While we wait for the second part of the project, it’s a great way to reconnect with Theory of a Deadman!
