With a breezy and mischievous attitude, Niis deliver a six-track EP via Rise Records where nineties alternative rock makes a forceful and very welcome comeback. Between sunnier and more energetic grunge echoes and melodic punk hints. In six tracks, Niis transport us mentally back to a world of teenagers who were angry, but not too angry, with a sense of nostalgia for those days when baggy pants, skating, coming-of-age films and alternative music filled our every waking hour. It has to be said that the result is excellent, thanks to an enviable energy and vitality, a strong vocal performance from Mimi Doe across both the melodic and the more abrasive moments, and an attitude that feels genuine rather than carefully calculated. For the more seasoned listeners, and the slightly older ones among us, some of it may feel familiar, but there is no denying that these kids know exactly what they are doing, and tracks like “Big Fish Baby”, “Take Your Mess” and “No Flowers” hit exactly where they are supposed to.
